Start with the full 6-part series on how we prepped, survived and thrived in a pandemic outbreak.

I overheard a woman in a grocery store how she couldn't find any pet food to feed her Chihuahua so she had to buy deli meat.

I never want to be in a position where we can't feed our pets due to my lack of preparation.

Pets are family and must be prepped for as such.

Not to mention Pet Supermarket recently implemented a new rule which makes it harder for you to get pet food but atleast they are open:

I could force myself to eat rice and beans to survive but pets are pickier and they have to stay on the same routine.

Food for pets should be split into the same two categories like for humans: non-perishable and perishable. You will have to determine what is right size to store based on the number of pets you have and their size. Larger dogs will need a lot more food on back up.

Non-Perishable Pet Food List

  • Dry cat food 20+lbs
  • Canned food 2+ cases (24+ cans)

Dry Cat Food

I purchased over 20+lbs of Blue Buffalo dry cat food:

Canned Cat Food

We also stocked up on Wellness canned cat food. At the very minimum 2 cases (24 cans). These have a long shelf life.

Perishable Pet Food List

  • Instinct Raw Frozen (10+ lbs)
  • Water

Instinct Raw Frozen Food

We feed our cats Instinct raw food, cage-free chicken recipe. These are little harder to find due to freezer space in the store. So these are always limited in supply.

We got as many bags as we could find but also we have to share the freezer with the rest of the food we are storing. So this is a bit tricky to get right. A second freezer would solve this problem. That will be something to do once we have a house.

Water

We give our cats the same water we drink so this is already taken care of. You can see Part 3 of the Surviving and Thriving Pandemic Guide that will tell you what food to prep with.

Other Considerations for Your Pets

  • Cat litter (2+ bags, 20lbs each)
  • Medicine

Dogs can go outside but for cats you'll need to stock up on cat litter. We buy Feline Pine Cat Litter:

If you have any pets on special medical needs, you must prep for it. Many vets and ER clinics either have limited hours or have closed until further notice. You'll need to talk to your Vet and stock up on things to maintain your pet's health until they reopen or have time to see you.

It is impossible to determine how long something like this will last so having food and medicine for up to a month if not more is a good idea.
